Boats and Streams

Question:

The speed of a boat in still water is 6 km/h. Time taken by the boat to cover a certain distance upstream is 3 hours more than the time taken to cover the same distance downstream. If the speed of the stream is 2 km/h, then what is the total distance, upstream and downstream, covered by the boat?

Options:

72 km

24 km

48 km

36 km

Correct Answer:

48 km

Explanation:

Given,

The speed of boat in still water = 6 km/hour

The speed of stream = 2 km/hour

The speed of stream in downstream = 8 km/hour

The speed of stream in upstream = 4 km/hour

Let the distance be D km

Now, according to question

\(\frac{D}{4}\)= 3 + \(\frac{D}{8}\)

= \(\frac{D}{4}\)– \(\frac{D}{8}\)= 3

= \(\frac{D}{8}\)= 3

D = 24

The total distance covered by the boat in upstream and downstream = 24 × 2 = 48 km
