A block diagram of a typical receiver in a communication system is as shown in figure. The various components in correct sequence is:

A. Detector
B. Amplifier 1
C. IF stage
D. Amplifier 2
E. Receiving Antenna
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → (i)-E, (ii)-B, (iii)-C, (iv)-A, (v)-D
In a receiver the blocks follow the path of the signal from the air to the output.
(i) — E. Receiving Antenna. It picks up the transmitted signal.
(ii) — B. Amplifier 1. The received signal is very weak, so it is amplified first.
(iii) — C. IF stage. The carrier frequency is changed to a lower intermediate frequency.
(iv) — A. Detector. The message signal is separated from the carrier.
(v) — D. Amplifier 2. The recovered message is weak, so it is amplified again before the output.
Note: This question is from the pre-rationalised NCERT book (2022-23). The topic was removed from the latest NCERT book (2026-27), and it also appears to be out of the CUET 2026 syllabus.
NCERT (Pre-rationalised edition, 2022-23):
Detection of Amplitude Modulated Wave – “The transmitted message gets attenuated in propagating through the channel. The receiving antenna is therefore to be followed by an amplifier and a detector. In addition, to facilitate further processing, the carrier frequency is usually changed to a lower frequency by what is called an intermediate frequency (IF) stage preceding the detection. The detected signal may not be strong enough to be made use of and hence is required to be amplified.”
