Identify the correct order of organic compounds in the following chemical reaction :

(A) CH3MgBr
(B) CH3Br
(C) CH3Cl
(D) CH4
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 1
The correct answer is Option (1) → (B), (A), (D), (C)
A haloalkane reacts with magnesium in dry ether to give an alkylmagnesium halide, the Grignard reagent. Grignard reagents react with any source of a proton, even water, to give the hydrocarbon. An alkane in turn undergoes free radical chlorination when heated (or exposed to light) with chlorine.
Bromomethane (B) reacts with magnesium in dry ether to give methylmagnesium bromide (A); the ether must be dry, because water would destroy the reagent at once:
\( \displaystyle \ce{CH3Br + Mg} \xrightarrow{\text{dry ether}} \ce{CH3MgBr} \)
Water then protonates the methyl group and gives methane (D):
\( \displaystyle \ce{CH3MgBr + H2O -> CH4 + Mg(OH)Br} \)
Heating methane with chlorine replaces one hydrogen atom by chlorine and gives chloromethane (C):
\( \displaystyle \ce{CH4 + Cl2} \xrightarrow{\Delta} \ce{CH3Cl + HCl} \)
So the compounds appear in the order (B), (A), (D), (C).
Shortcut: The product of a Grignard reagent with water must be the alkane, \( \ce{CH4} \) (D), in the third place, and the first compound must be the halide whose Grignard reagent, \( \ce{CH3MgBr} \) (A), comes second. Only Option (1) has (B) first and (D) third.
