V.V. Giri was the vice president of India in 1969. Indira Gandhi encouraged him to file his nomination as an independent candidate for the Presidential elections of 1969. He won the election when it was conducted.

(Indira Gandhi won the 1971 General elections.  She said that the opposition alliance had only one common programme: Indira Hatao (Remove Indira). The "Garibi Hatao" (Eradicate Poverty) slogan was actually associated with the Indian National Congress party and was popularized during the 1971 general elections in India.)
