Which among the following items do not appear in the Receipt and Payment Account ?
(A) Life membership fees
(B) Depreciation of fixed assets
(C) Provision of doubtful debts
(D) Profit/loss on sale of fixed assets
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 1
The correct answer is Option (1) → (B), (C) and (D) only
The Receipt and Payment Account is a summary of the cash book. It shows every actual receipt and payment of cash, capital or revenue, and nothing that does not involve cash.
(A) Life membership fees — Incorrect. Life membership fees are received in cash, so they do appear on the receipts side (as a capital receipt).
(B) Depreciation of fixed assets — Correct. Depreciation is a non-cash item; no cash leaves the organisation, so it does not appear.
(C) Provision of doubtful debts — Correct. A provision for doubtful debts is only a book adjustment with no cash flow, so it does not appear.
(D) Profit/loss on sale of fixed assets — Correct. Only the cash from the sale of an asset is recorded; the profit or loss on the sale is a book figure, worked out for the Income and Expenditure Account, so it does not appear.
Note 1: It seems that there is a mistake in the original NTA question. It asked which items “appear” in the Receipt and Payment Account; only (A) appears, and no option gives (A) alone, so the question could not be answered as printed. For the benefit of students and to ensure that the question is correct and has a single valid answer, “appear” has been changed to “do not appear”.
Note 2: This question is from the pre-rationalised NCERT book. The topic is not there in the latest NCERT book (2026-27), but it is still in the CUET 2026 syllabus, so do not skip it.
