Explanation:

According to Article 124 of the Constitution, 'every judge of the Supreme Court shall be appointed by the President after consultation with such of the Judges of the Supreme Court and of the High Courts in the States, as the President may deem necessary'. The Article also provides that in case of appointment of a judge other than the Chief Justice of India, the Chief Justice must be consulted. The Article further provides for the qualifications required to become a judge at the Supreme Court. These qualifications include :

1. Citizenship of India, and

2. Has been for atleast five years a Judge of a High Court or of two or more High Courts in succession;
