A.K. Gopalan began his political career as a Congress worker (joined in 1927) in Kerala. In 1939, he made the decision to join the Communist Party. Following the split in the Communist Party in 1964, Gopalan aligned himself with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (co-founder). In 1956, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar renounced Hinduism and embraced Buddhism with thousands of his followers. The Congress party, after losing power in Kerala in 1957, initiated a "liberation struggle" against the elected Communist government. In 1959, the Congress government at the Center dismissed the Communist government in Kerala using Article 356 of the Constitution, sparking controversy. This event was widely considered the first instance of the misuse of constitutional emergency powers. Towards the late 1990s, the Election Commission introduced Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). By 2004, the entire country had transitioned to using EVMs for elections. |
