Gaidinliu led a guerrilla war against the British for over a decade. She was eventually captured by the British in 1939 and sentenced to life imprisonment. She was released later.

Gaidinliu was a national heroine of India. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Vibhushan, and the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honors in India. She died in 1993 at the age of 78.
