Question:

Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions:

The two dominant features of our age are the science and democracy. They have come to stay and brought the revolution to the human life. We cannot ask the educated people to accept the deliverances of faith without rational evidence. Whatever we are called upon to accept must be justified and supported by reason. Otherwise our religious beliefs will be reduced to wishful thinking. Modern man must learn to live with a religion which commends itself to his intellectual conscience, to the spirit of science. Moreover, religion should be the sustaining faith of democracy which insists on the intellectual and spiritual development of every human being irrespective of his caste, creed, community or race. Any religion which divides man from man and supports privileges, exploitation and wars cannot commend itself to us today.

Match the List-1 with List-2 and choose the correct answer from the options given below:

1. Educated people                 A. must accept only reasoned beliefs

2. True religion                                     B. promotes equal and spiritual growth

3. Religion without reason                               C. is reduced to wishful thinking

4. Exploitative religion                        D. cannot appeal to modern society

Options:

 1-A, 2-B, 3-C, 4-D

  1-B, 2-A, 3-D, 4-C

 1-C, 2-D, 3-B, 4-A

 1-D, 2-C, 3-A, 4-B

Correct Answer:

 1-A, 2-B, 3-C, 4-D

Explanation:

The correct answer is:OPTION 1 - 1-A, 2-B, 3-C, 4-D

  • Educated people → A. must accept only reasoned beliefs
The passage says “We cannot ask the educated people to accept the deliverances of faith without rational evidence.”
This implies that educated people need beliefs supported by reason.

  • True religion → B. promotes equal and spiritual growth
It says religion should support “intellectual and spiritual development of every human being irrespective of his caste, creed, community or race.”
So, a true religion promotes equality and spiritual growth.

  • Religion without reason → C. is reduced to wishful thinking
“Otherwise our religious beliefs will be reduced to wishful thinking.”
If there is no reason behind belief, it becomes mere wishful thinking.

  • Exploitative religion → D. cannot appeal to modern society
The line “Any religion which divides man from man and supports privileges, exploitation and wars cannot commend itself to us today” makes this clear.
Such a religion won’t appeal to the modern mind.
