When he was asked to give dimensions of the plot, he told that if its length (x) is decreased by 50 m and breadth (y) is increased by 50 m, then its area will remain same, but if length is decreased by 10 m and breadth is decreased by 20 m, then its area will decrease by 5300 m².

The value of y is

150 m

$x-y = 50$         .....(1)

$2x-y = 550$       .....(2)

eq(1) × 2 we get

$2x - 2y = 100$       .....(3)

eq(2) - eq(3)     [Subtracting (3) from (2)]

$\Rightarrow 3y = 450$

$y = 150$
