Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated on 31 October 1984 outside her residence by her bodyguards. Both the assassins were Sikhs and wanted to take revenge for Operation Bluestar. Rajiv Gandhi, son of Indira Gandhi became the next Prime Minister of India after her death. He served as the Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989.
