Question:

Using the formula $tan\frac{x}{2}=\frac{1-cosx}{sinx}$, find the value of tan22.5o.

Options:

$\sqrt{2} -1$

$\sqrt{2} +1$

$\frac{\sqrt{3}+\sqrt{2}}{2}$

$\frac{\sqrt{3}-\sqrt{2}}{2}$

Correct Answer:

$\sqrt{2} -1$

Explanation:

tan \(\frac{x}{2}\) = \(\frac{1-cosx}{sinx}\)

Put x = 45º

tan \(\frac{45º }{2}\) = \(\frac{1-cos45º }{sin45º }\)

tan 22.5º = \(\frac{1-cos45º }{sin45º }\)

= \(\frac{1- 1/√2 }{1/√2}\)

= √2 - 1
