Various protests were organized by the inhabitants of the region against the setting up of the POSCO (Pohang Iron and Steel Company, a South-Korean multinational steel-making company ) steel plant in Orissa.
One of the reports of 'The Hindu', dated 23rd June 2006, mentioned the demonstrations organized by the people of Jagatsinghpur district and adjoining districts of Dhinkia, Nuagaon, and Gadakujnaga. They demanded the cancelation of the memorandum of understanding signed between the company and the Orissa government one year ago. The protestors raised slogans and said that the company should not be allowed to set up its plant at the cost of their lives and livelihood. The demonstration was organized by the Rashtriya Yuva Sangathan and the Nabanirman Samiti.
