Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance

Question:

The electrostatic potential on the surface of a charged conducting sphere is 200V. Two statements are made in this regard:

Statement 1 : At any point inside the sphere, electric field intensity is zero.

Statement 2 : At any point inside the sphere, the electrostatic potential is 200V.

Which of the following is a correct statement?

Options:

S1 is true but S2 is false.

Both S1 & S2 are false.

S1 is true, S2 is also true and S1 is the cause of S2.

S1 is true, S2 is also true but the statements are independent.

Correct Answer:

S1 is true, S2 is also true and S1 is the cause of S2.

Explanation:

Electric field is zero inside the conductor and hence electric Potential is a constant inside the conductor because E = -dV/dr = 0, hence V is constant.
