Shyama Prasad Mukherjee:
He was born in Calcutta in a Bengali Brahmin family.
He emerged as a leader of Hindu Mahasabha, advocating for the interests of the Hindu community.
With the support of the RSS, he founded the 'Bharatiya Jana Sangh', which eventually evolved into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Thus, he is widely regarded as the founder of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Mukherjee served as Minister for Industry and Supply in Nehru's first cabinet after independence.
Due to disagreements over the government's approach to relations with Pakistan (Nehru-Liaquat Pact), he resigned in 1950.
He was a member of the Constituent Assembly & later served the first Lok Sabha.
He held contrasting views on India's policy of granting autonomy to J&K.
During the Jana Sangh's agitation against the government's Kashmir policy, he was arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
He passed away in detention, a day after being provisionally diagnosed with a heart attack. |
