Question:

If $A=\begin{bmatrix}x&-y\\y&x\end{bmatrix}$ and $A+ A'= 2I$, then $x$ is equal to

Options:

0

-1

0.5

1

Correct Answer:

1

Explanation:

$A=\begin{bmatrix}x&-y\\y&x\end{bmatrix}$

$A'=\begin{bmatrix}x&y\\-y&x\end{bmatrix}$

so $A+ A'= 2I$

$⇒\begin{bmatrix}x&-y\\y&x\end{bmatrix}+\begin{bmatrix}x&y\\-y&x\end{bmatrix}=\begin{bmatrix}2&0\\0&2\end{bmatrix}$

so $\begin{bmatrix}2x&0\\0&2x\end{bmatrix}=\begin{bmatrix}2&0\\0&2\end{bmatrix}$

so $x=1$
