Before 1921, India was in the 1st stage of demographic transition where as 2nd phase started after the year 1921. However, at this point neither the population nor the population growth rate was very high or a cause of concern. The period starting from 1951-1981 is referred as population explosion where a high fertility rate or birth rate and low death rate was seen.
