Question:

The price of diesel increased by 16%. A person wants to increase his expenditure on diesel by 10% only. By what percentage, correct to one decimal place, should he reduce his consumption?

Options:

6.5%

5.2%

3.7%

4.5%

Correct Answer:

5.2%

Explanation:

16% = \(\frac{4}{25}\)

10% = \(\frac{1}{10}\)

ATQ ,

Price                 25  :    29

Consumption      a   :    b

Expenditure      10   :   11

{ Price × Consumption = Expenditure }

Now ,

\(\frac{25a}{29b}\) = \(\frac{10}{11}\)

\(\frac{a}{b}\) = \(\frac{290}{275}\)

Consumption decreases by = 290  -  275 = 15

Decreased percentage = \(\frac{15}{290}\) × 100 = 5.17%

= 5.2%
