Arrange the given steps of megasporogenesis during development of ovule in correct sequence.
(A) Megaspore tetrad
(B) Mature embryo sac
(C) Megaspore dyad
(D) Megaspore mother cell
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → (D), (C), (A), (B)
(D) Megaspore mother cell — first. The ovule forms a single large megaspore mother cell (MMC) in the micropylar region of the nucellus. It is diploid.
(C) Megaspore dyad — second. The MMC divides by meiosis. The first meiotic division gives two cells, the dyad.
(A) Megaspore tetrad — third. The second meiotic division gives four haploid megaspores, the tetrad. In most plants three of them die and only one, the functional megaspore, stays.
(B) Mature embryo sac — last. The nucleus of the functional megaspore divides three times by mitosis, giving 2, 4 and then 8 nuclei. Cell walls form, and the 7-celled, 8-nucleate mature embryo sac (female gametophyte) is ready.

The Pistil, Megasporangium (ovule) and Embryo sac – “… Megasporogenesis : The process of formation of megaspores from the megaspore mother cell is called megasporogenesis.”
The Pistil, Megasporangium (ovule) and Embryo sac – “… Female gametophyte : In a majority of flowering plants, one of the megaspores is functional while the other three degenerate. Only the functional megaspore develops into the female gametophyte (embryo sac).”
The Pistil, Megasporangium (ovule) and Embryo sac – “… The nucleus of the functional megaspore divides mitotically to form two nuclei which move to the opposite poles, forming the 2-nucleate embryo sac. Two more sequential mitotic nuclear divisions result in the formation of the 4-nucleate and later the 8-nucleate stages of the embryo sac.”
