| Why do the tenants in Indian villages have lower incomes than cultivators? |
The tenants have to pay 50-75 per cent of the income to crop as rent to the landowners, The land allotted by the grama panchayath for the tenants usually lies in the less fertile region of the village. The tenants are basically agricultural labourers. They live with the wages earned from the land owner. The tenant system is basically meant for the consumption of the tenants they do not expect profit from their agricultural ventures. |
