Question:

Which insects are phytophagous in nature?

Options:

Insects which live and feed on the roots of plants.

Insects that feed on dead plant tissues.

Insects which feed on epiphytes.

Insects which feed on plant sap and other parts of plants.

Correct Answer:

Insects which feed on plant sap and other parts of plants.

Explanation:

Phytophagous are those which feeds on plant sap and other parts of plants. Organisms who live and feed on dead organic materials and obtain nutrition for their growth are known as saprophytes. Example – Mucor, yeast. Saprophytes are mostly fungus and/or bacteria. Saprophytes decompose dead plants and animals and convert complex molecules into simpler molecules. The fungi helps the plant in the absorption of essential nutrients from the soil while the plant in turn provides the fungi with energy-yielding carbohydrates. An orchid growing as an epiphyte on a mango branch, this is an example of commensalism interaction.
