Question:

Two stations are 120 km apart on a straight line. A train starts from station A at 8 a.m. and moves towards station B at 20 km/h, and another train starts from station B at 9 a.m. and travels towards station A at a speed of 30 km/h. At what time will they meet?

Options:

10:30 a.m.

10:00 a.m.

11:00 a.m.

11:30 a.m

Correct Answer:

11:00 a.m.

Explanation:

Distance between two stations = 120 km

From 8:00 am to 9:00 am , Only train  A travels . so ,

Distance traveled = 20 × 1 = 20 km

Remaining distance = 120 - 20 = 100 km

Relative speed = 20 + 30 = 50 km/h

( when both trains moves in opposite direction )

So , Time taken = \(\frac{100}{50}\) = 2 hours

Hence , both the trains will meet at 9:00 am + 2 hours = 11:00 am
