Physical: Solutions

Question:

Depending upon the physical states of the solute and the solvent, the solutions can be classified into the following types:

Solute

Solvent

Common Examples

Gaseous Solution

Gas

Gas

The mixture of nitrogen and oxygen gases, air

Liquid

Gas

Chloroform mixed with nitrogen gas, water vapour in the air (humidity)

Solid

Gas

Camphor in nitrogen gas, dust, or smoke particles in the air

Liquid Solutions

Gas

Liquid

Oxygen dissolved in water, CO2 dissolved in water

Liquid

Liquid

Ethanol or methanol dissolved in water

Solid

Liquid

Sucrose or salt in water

Solid Solutions

Gas

Solid

Solution of hydrogen in palladium (the phenomenon of adsorption of gases over metals)

Liquid

Solid

Mercury with sodium (amalgams)

Solid

Solid

Copper dissolved in gold (alloys)

Out of these nine types of solutions, three solutions, namely solid in liquid, liquid in liquid, and gas in liquid are very common. In all these three types of solutions, liquid acts as a solvent.

The solutions in which water is the solvent are called aqueous solutions while those in which the solvent is other than water are called non-aqueous solutions. The common non-aqueous solvents are ether, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, etc.

What is camphor in N2 gas an example of?

Options:

Solid in liquid solution

Liquid in gas solution

Solid in gas solution

Gas in gas solution

Correct Answer:

Solid in gas solution

Explanation:

The answer is 3. Solid in gas solution.

Camphor is a solid at room temperature, and nitrogen gas (N2) is a gas at room temperature. When camphor is dissolved in nitrogen gas, it forms a solid in gas solution. This is because the camphor molecules are dispersed throughout the nitrogen gas on a molecular level.

The other options are not correct. A solid in liquid solution is a solution of a solid in a liquid. A liquid in gas solution is a solution of a liquid in a gas. Gas in gas solution is a solution of two or more gases.

Therefore, camphor in N2 gas is an example of a solid in gas solution.
