A soldier fires a bullet in the air and at time ‘t’ the bullet travels along the path x = 2t, y = t – 2, z = 5 – t. Then the path of the bullet is a

Options:

Parabola

Straight line with direction ratios 2, 1, –1

Straight line with direction ratios 2, 1, 1

Ellipse centred at (0, 2, 5)

Correct Answer:

Straight line with direction ratios 2, 1, –1

Explanation:

x = 2t         y = t - 2        z = 5 - t

so  $\frac{x}{2}=t ~~~~\frac{y+2}{1}=t ~~~~\frac{z-5}{-1}=t$

so  $\frac{x}{2}=\frac{y+z}{1}=\frac{z-5}{-1}$  →  equation of straight line direction ratios (2, 1, -1)
