Question:

Two bulbs rated (25W - 220V) and (100W - 220V) are connected in series to a 440V line. Which one is likely to fuse ?

Options:

25W Bulb

100W bulb

Both

None of these

Correct Answer:

25W Bulb

Explanation:

$ R_1 = \frac{V^2}{P_1} = \frac{220^2}{25} = 1936 \Omega , I_1 = \frac{P_1}{V} = \frac{25}{220} = 0.11A $

$ R_2 = \frac{V^2}{P_2} = \frac{220^2}{100} = 484 \Omega , I_1 = \frac{P_2}{V} = \frac{100}{220} = 0.45A$

$\text{When these two bulbs are connected in series then } R  = R_1+R_2 = 1936\Omega + 484\Omega = 2420\Omega$

$ I = \frac{ 440}{2420} = 0.18A$

Only 25W bulb will fuse.
