Reason (R) - Global burden of disease is an indicator used by experts to gauge the number of people dying prematurely due to a particular disease, as well as, the number of years spent by them in a state of ‘disability’ owing to the disease.

Options:

(A) is true but (R) is false.

(A) is false but (R) is true.

Correct Answer:

Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).

Explanation:

Indicators of health and health infrastructure:  The health status of a country can be assessed through indicators, such as infant mortality and maternal mortality rates, life expectancy and nutrition levels, along with the incidence of communicable and non-communicable diseases.

One study points out that India has about one-fifth of the world’s population but it bears a frightening 20 percent of the global burden of diseases (GBD). GBD is an indicator used by experts to gauge the number of people dying prematurely due to a particular disease, as well as, the number of years spent by them in a state of ‘disability’ owing to the disease. A 2017 study shows nearly two-thirds of GBD, now known as Total Burden of Disease was caused by non-communicable diseases associated with the heart, respiratory system – lungs, kidney, obesity, and lifestyle. Diarrhoea, lower respiratory system and other common infectious diseases account for one-sixth of total deaths in India.
