Question:

After traveling 170 km a train met with an accident and its speed became 4/5th of its actual speed and reached 36 minutes late. If this accident had happened after 25 more km the train would have reached the station 24 minutes late. Find the reduced speed of train.

Options:

50

25

20

40

Correct Answer:

25

Explanation:

Let initial speed = x km/hr

Decreased speed = \(\frac{4x}{5}\) km/hr

If this accident had occurred after travelling 25 km more this means speed of train in that 25 km also is x km/hr instead of \(\frac{4x}{5}\) km/hr and that makes a difference of  ( 36 - 24 ) = 12 min in time taken .

\(\frac{25 \;× \;5}{4x}\)   -  \(\frac{25}{x}\)    =  \(\frac{12}{60}\)

\(\frac{125 \;- \;100}{4x}\)     =    \(\frac{12}{60}\)

x = \(\frac{125}{4}\)

Reduced speed =  \(\frac{4x}{5}\)  =  \(\frac{4 \;× \; 125}{5 \;× \; 4 }\) = 25 km/hr

So , Reduced speed of train = 25 km/hr
