If (7x+y) : (7x-y) = 7 : 3, then what is the value of x : y?

5 : 14

Given  (7x+y) : (7x-y) = 7 : 3,

Adding the terms, (7x+y) + (7x-y) = 7 + 3

                                           14x   = 10 or x = $\frac{10}{14}$    

Subtracting the terms, (7x+y) - (7x-y) = 7 - 3

                                                 2y    = 4  or y = 2

Thus, x : y = $\frac{10}{14}$ : 2 = 5 : 14
