Which among the following statements are correct : (A) Albuminous seeds retain a part of endosperm as it is not completely used up during embryo development (B) Wheat, maize, barley, castor are examples of non-albuminous seeds. (C) In black pepper and beet, remnants of nucellus are persistent i.e pericarp . (D) The embryo may enter a state of inactivity called dormancy. Choose the correct answer from the given options . |
A and C only A , B and C only A and D only A, B and D only |
A and D only |
The correct answer is Option (3)- A and D only. Albuminous seeds are seeds that have a large amount of endosperm, which is a tissue that stores food for the developing embryo. Examples of albuminous seeds include wheat, maize, and castor. Non-albuminous seeds are seeds in which the endosperm is completely consumed by the developing embryo. Examples of non-albuminous seeds include peas, beans, groundnut. In some seeds such as black pepper and beet, remnants of nucellus are also persistent. This residual, persistent nucellus is the perisperm. As the seed matures, its water content is reduced and seeds become relatively dry (10-15 percent moisture by mass). The general metabolic activity of the embryo slows down. The embryo may enter a state of inactivity called dormancy, or if favourable conditions are available (adequate moisture, oxygen and suitable temperature), they germinate. |
