With reference to the uses of transgenic animals, identify the incorrect statement.
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → To make better quality seeds
Transgenic animals carry and express a foreign gene.
Option (1) To study disease — A use of transgenic animals. Models are made for diseases such as cancer, cystic fibrosis and Alzheimer's.
Option (2) To test vaccine safety — A use of transgenic animals. Transgenic mice test the safety of vaccines, such as the polio vaccine.
Option (3) To test chemical safety — A use of transgenic animals. Animals made more sensitive to toxins give results faster.
Option (4) To make better quality seeds — Not a use of transgenic animals. Seeds belong to plants; better seeds come from transgenic plants and plant breeding.
NCERT Extract:
Transgenic Animals – “… (v) Chemical safety testing: This is known as toxicity/safety testing. The procedure is the same as that used for testing toxicity of drugs. Transgenic animals are made that carry genes which make them more sensitive to toxic substances than non-transgenic animals. They are then exposed to the toxic substances and the effects studied. Toxicity testing in such animals will allow us to obtain results in less time.”
Transgenic Animals – “… (ii) Study of disease: Many transgenic animals are designed to increase our understanding of how genes contribute to the development of disease. These are specially made to serve as models for human diseases so that investigation of new treatments for diseases is made possible.”
Transgenic Animals – “… (iv) Vaccine safety: Transgenic mice are being developed for use in testing the safety of vaccines before they are used on humans. Transgenic mice are being used to test the safety of the polio vaccine.”
