Question:

In an election, a candidate secures 42% of the votes polled but is defeated by his only opponent by a majority of 3080 votes, because of 1400 invalid votes. The percentage of invalid votes is _______.

Options:

5%

3%

4%

6%

Correct Answer:

5%

Explanation:

Votes of looser candidate = 42% of valid votes

So , Votes of winner candidate = ( 100 - 42 )% of valid votes

= 58% of valid votes

According to question ,

58% - 42% - 1400 = 3080

16% of valid votes = 4480

100% of valid votes = \(\frac{4480}{16}\) × 100  = 28000

Now , Percentage of invalid votes = \(\frac{1400}{28000}\)  × 100 = 5%
