Question:

A thief is noticed by a policeman from a distance of 150m. The thief starts running and the policeman chases him. The thief and the policeman run at the rate of 8 kmph and 10kmph respectively. At what distance will the policeman catches the thief?

Options:

1000 m

850 m

500 m

750 m

Correct Answer:

750 m

Explanation:

Initially the distance b/w the thief and the policeman = 150m

The relative speed  = 10 - 8 = 2km/h

2 km/h = 2 × \(\frac{5}{18}\) = \(\frac{5}{9}\) m/sec

Time taken by police to caught thief ,

Time = $\frac{distance}{relative speed}$ = $\frac{150 × 9 }{5}$ =  270 seconds

Distance covered by the thief in 270 sec  = speed x time

= 8 x  \(\frac{5}{18}\) × 270  = 600 m

Distance when police caught thief = 150 + 600 = 750 m
