The main coal fields of India form a belt across the central and eastern parts of the country.
Note: The given answer is as per the official NTA Answer Key. The book does not use the words “Central-Eastern India”. It places the main coal fields in the Damodar, Godavari, Mahanadi and Sone valleys, and Fig. 5.4 shows these coal fields in the central and eastern parts of the country.
NCERT (2026-27): “About 80 per cent of the coal deposits in India is of bituminous type and is of non-coking grade. The most important Gondwana coal fields of India are located in Damodar Valley. They lie in Jharkhand-Bengal coal belt and the important coal fields in this region are Raniganj, Jharia, Bokaro, Giridih, Karanpura.” “Jharia is the largest coal field followed by Raniganj. The other river valleys associated with coal are Godavari, Mahanadi and Sone.”
