Henry Lawrence, the Commissioner of Lucknow, collected the Christian population and took refuge in the heavily fortified Residency during the revolt of 1857. Lawrence was killed in Nov 1857. 'Relief of Lucknow' was painted by Thomas Jones Barker in 1859. Late in the afternoon of 10 May 1857, the sepoys in the cantonment of Meerut broke out in mutiny.
