Question:

A thief escapes custody at 10 a.m. He runs at a speed of 40 km/h. The policeman starts chasing the thief at 11:30 a.m., starting from the point from where the thief escaped custody. The speed of the policeman is 60 km/h. At what time will he catch the thief?

Options:

2:45 p.m.

2:00 p.m.

2:15 p.m.

2:30 p.m.

Correct Answer:

2:30 p.m.

Explanation:

Distance = Speed × Time

Distance covered by thief in 1.5 hours = 40 × 1.5 = 60 km

Relative speed of thief and police = ( 60 - 40 ) = 20 km/h

Time when police caught thief = \(\frac{60}{20}\)

= 3 hours

So they will meet at = 11:30 am + 3 hours = 2:30 pm
