Chinese Invasion: 1962

China laid claim to two regions within Indian territory: the Aksai Chin area in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, and a substantial portion of the state of Arunachal Pradesh (then known as NEFA - North Eastern Frontier Agency). Between 1957 and 1959, China occupied the Aksai Chin region and constructed a strategically significant road there. In October 1962, China initiated a swift and massive invasion of both disputed regions. The initial attack lasted for a week, during which Chinese forces seized strategic areas in Arunachal Pradesh. Following that, a second wave of attack occurred the next month. While Indian forces managed to halt Chinese advances on the western front in Ladakh, on the eastern front, Chinese troops progressed nearly to the entry point of the Assam plains. Subsequently, China declared a unilateral ceasefire and withdrew its troops to their positions before the invasion.

Tashkent Agreement: 1966

In January 1966, Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and Pakistan’s General Ayub Khan formalized an agreement known as the Tashkent Agreement, following the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, which had been facilitated by the Soviet Union. The agreement aimed to restore peace and normalize relations between the two countries after the conflict.

India signed the Peace and Friendship Treaty with the USSR for 20 years: 1971

In an effort to counterbalance the alliance between the US, Pakistan, and China during the Indo-Pak War of 1971, India established a 20-year Treaty of Peace and Friendship with the Soviet Union in August 1971. This pact assured India of Soviet backing in case of any hostile threats.

Shimla Agreement -1972

The Shimla agreement that was signed on 3 July 1972 between India's Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistan's President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Atal Behari Vajpayee's Visit to China -1979

The process of normalizing relations between India and China spanned over a decade. The year 1976 marked the restoration of full diplomatic ties between these two nations. Notably, Atal Behari Vajpayee, who held the position of External Affairs Minister at that time, undertook a significant visit to China in 1979. Subsequently, Rajiv Gandhi became the first Prime Minister after Nehru to visit China. From that point onward, the focus has predominantly shifted towards fostering trade relations between India and China.
