Question:

Warren Hastings became the first Governor General of India in which year?

Options:

1767

1757

1773

1783

Correct Answer:

1773

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option 3- 1773

Warren Hastings became the first Governor General of India in 1773.

Prior to 1773, the British East India Company governed its possessions in India through three separate presidencies: Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras. Each presidency was headed by a governor who had a great deal of autonomy. This system was inefficient and often led to conflict between the presidencies.

In 1773, the British Parliament passed the Regulating Act, which established a new system of government for British India. The act created a new position, the Governor General of India, who would have supreme authority over the three presidencies. The act also created a Supreme Council of Bengal, which would assist the Governor General.

Warren Hastings was appointed as the first Governor General of India in 1773. He served as Governor General until 1785. During his time in office, Hastings implemented a number of reforms, including a new land revenue system and a new judicial system. He also expanded the British East India Company's territory in India.

Hastings was a controversial figure. He was accused of corruption and of being too harsh in his dealings with Indians. However, he is also credited with laying the foundation for the British Empire in India.
