The Chipko movement was actually started by the villagers of Uttarakhand (then part of Uttar Pradesh) in the Himalayas in 1973, and it was an environmental movement aimed at protecting trees and forests from being felled.

The Chipko Movement- The movement began in two or three villages of Uttarakhand when the forest department refused permission to the villagers to fell ash trees for making agricultural tools. However, the forest department allotted the same patch of land to a sports manufacturer for commercial use. The Chipko Movement was an environmental movement to prevent cutting down of trees. It raised questions on ecological and economic exploitation. The movement demanded that local communities should have control over their natural resources. Women’s active participation in the Chipko agitation was a very novel aspect of the movement. Sunderlal Bahuguna was an important leader of this movement.
