Question:

Find the value of x if \(\begin{vmatrix}3x & 5 \\2 & x \end{vmatrix}\) = \(\begin{vmatrix}4 & 5 \\13 & -5 \end{vmatrix}\)

Options:

5

-5

Both (a) and (b)

None of the above

Correct Answer:

Both (a) and (b)

Explanation:

\(\begin{vmatrix}3x & 5 \\2 & x \end{vmatrix}\) = \(\begin{vmatrix}4 & 5 \\13 & -5 \end{vmatrix}\)

\(⇒3 { x }^{ 2 } -10 =-20- 65\)

so \(3 { x }^{ 2 }  = -75\)

\({ x }^{ 2 }  = -25\)

so $x=±5$
