Identify the hormone with its correct matching of source and function.

Options:

Oxytocin - anterior pituitary, growth and maintenance of mammary glands.

Melatonin - the pineal gland, regulates the normal rhythm of the sleep-wake cycle.

Progesterone - corpus-luteum, stimulation of growth and activities of female secondary sex organs.

Atrial natriuretic factor - ventricular wall increases blood pressure.

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option (2) - Melatonin - the pineal gland, regulates the normal rhythm of the sleep-wake cycle.

Neurohypophysis (pars nervosa) also known as posterior pituitary, stores and releases two hormones called oxytocin and vasopressin, which are actually synthesised by the hypothalamus and are transported axonally to neurohypophysis.

The pineal gland is located on the dorsal side of forebrain. Pineal secretes a hormone called melatonin. Melatonin plays a very important role in the regulation of a 24-hour (diurnal) rhythm of our body.

After ovulation, the ruptured follicle is converted to a structure called corpus luteum, which secretes mainly progesterone.Progesterone supports pregnancy. Progesterone also acts on the mammary glands and stimulates the formation of alveoli (sac-like structures which store milk) and milk secretion.

The atrial wall of our heart secretes a very important peptide hormone called atrial natriuretic factor (ANF).
