The Indian National Flag was adopted on 22 July, 1947, by the Constituent Assembly of India.

Pingali Venkaiya designed the Indian national flag.

The flag is a horizontal tricolor of deep saffron (kesari) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom in equal proportion. The ratio of the width to the length of the flag is 2:3. In the center of the white band is a navy blue wheel with 24 equally spaced spokes which represents the Ashoka Chakra. The design of the wheel is that of the wheel which appears on the abacus of the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka.

The Indian National Flag is a symbol of India's freedom and sovereignty. It is flown on all government buildings and on all important national occasions. The flag is also flown by many private individuals and businesses.
