Question:

In a linear race of 1000 m, A beats B by 50 m or 5 seconds. What is the difference between the speeds (in m/s) of A and B?

Options:

$1\frac{10}{19}$

$\frac{10}{19}$

$\frac{9}{19}$

$\frac{9}{10}$

Correct Answer:

$\frac{10}{19}$

Explanation:

Formula speed :-

Speed = \(\frac{Distance }{Time}\)

According to question ,

A beats B by 50 m or 5 sec i.e B covers 50 m in 5 sec

Speed of B =  \(\frac{50}{5}\) = 10 m/s

Time taken by B  to cover 1000 m =  \(\frac{1000}{10}\) = 100 sec

A beats B by 5 sec i.e. A reach 5 sec before B

Time taken by A  = 100 – 5 = 95 sec

Speed of A =  \(\frac{1000}{95}\) = \(\frac{200}{19}\) m/sec

Difference in speed of A and B = \(\frac{200}{19}\) - 10

= \(\frac{10}{19}\) m/sec
