Question:

Find the mean proportion between $(6 + \sqrt{8})$ and $(3-\sqrt{2})$.

Options:

$2\sqrt{12}$

$\sqrt{14}$

$(6 + \sqrt{8})$

$\sqrt{15}-7$

Correct Answer:

$\sqrt{14}$

Explanation:

Mean proportion of A and B = \(\sqrt {A\;\times\;B }\)

Mean proportion = \(\sqrt {(6+\sqrt{8})\; \times\; (3-\sqrt{2}) }\)   =  \(\sqrt {2(3+\sqrt{2})\; \times\; (3-\sqrt{2}) }\)

                       =  \(\sqrt {2(9\;-\;2) }\) = \(\sqrt {14 }\)
