Question:

The ratio of the speed of the boat in still water to the speed of the stream is 8 : 3 and the boat can travel 22 km downstream in 24 minutes. Then how much the will the boat take to cover 50 km upstream?

Options:

4 hrs

2.5 hrs

3 hrs

2 hrs

Correct Answer:

2 hrs

Explanation:

We know that,

Speed = Distance/Time

We have,

The ratio of the speed of the boat in still water to the speed of the stream = 8 : 3.

The boat can travel 22 km downstream in 24 minutes.

The ratio of the speed of the boat in still water to the speed of the stream is 8 : 3.

Let the speed of the boat in still water be 8a and the speed of the stream be 3a.

The boat can travel 22 km downstream in 24 minutes.

The speed of the boat downstream is 22/24 = 11/12 km/min = 11/12 × 60 = 55 km/hr.

The speed of the boat downstream is 8a + 3a = 11a.

So, 11a = 55 km/hr

a = 5 km/hr

The speed of the boat in still water is 8a = 40 km/hr.

The speed of the boat upstream is 8a – 3a = 5a = 25 km/hr.

The time taken by the boat to cover 50 km upstream is 50/25 = 2 hours.
