Question:

In a school, 60% of the number of students are boys and the rest are girls. If 20% of the number of boys failed and 65% of the number of girls passed the examination, then the percentage of the total number of students who passed is:

Options:

78

68

72

74

Correct Answer:

74

Explanation:

60% = \(\frac{3}{5}\)  , 80% = \(\frac{4}{5}\)  & 65% = \(\frac{13}{20}\)

Let total number of students = 100x

Number of boys = 100x × \(\frac{3}{5}\) = 60x

Number of girls = 100x – 60x = 40x

Number of passed boys = 60x × \(\frac{4}{5}\) = 48x

Number of passed girls = 40x × \(\frac{13}{20}\) = 26x

Total passed students = 48x + 26x = 74x

Required percentage = \(\frac{74x}{100x}\) × 100 = 74%
