Time, Speed and Distance

Question:

Two trains, running between Bangalore and Chennai, start at the same time from their respective locations and proceed towards each other at the speed of 80km/h and 95km/h. When they meet, it is found that one train has travelled 180km more than the other. The distance between Bangalore and Chennai is _______.

Options:

1200 km

2100 km

345km

400 km

Correct Answer:

2100 km

Explanation:

Let the time of traveling = a hours

Distance traveled by train with speed 80 km/h = 80 × a

Distance traveled by train with speed 95 km/h = 95 × a

According to the question,

Difference in distance traveled by two train  = 180 km

 95 a - 80 a = 180

 15 a=  180

 a = 12 hours

Distance between stations = 80 ×12 + 95 × 12  = 960 + 1140 = 2100km

Hence, the distance between Bangalore and Chennai is 2100 km .
