Question:

"This question contains a question and two statements labelled I and II giving certain data. You have to select the correct answer from (A) to (D) depending on the sufficiency of the data given in the statements to answer the question.
There are four friends — A, B, C and D. What is the difference in the marks obtained by A and D?
I. The difference in the marks obtained by A and C is 20 and that in the marks obtained by B and D is 15.
II. The difference in the marks obtained by B and C is 18. B got the highest marks.

Options:

If the question can be answered by using one of the statements alone but cannot be answered by using the other statement alone.

If the question can be answered by using either statement alone.

If the question can be answered by using both statements together but cannot be answered by using the statement alone.

If the question cannot he answered even by using both the statements together

Correct Answer:

If the question can be answered by using both statements together but cannot be answered by using the statement alone.

Explanation:

I. The difference in the marks obtained by A and C is 20 and that in the marks obtained by B and D is 15.

A - C = 20 & B + D = 15

II. The difference in the marks obtained by B and C is 18. B got the highest marks.

B - C = 18

By using both statement ,

A + B = 20 + 18 = 38     ---(1)

B + D = 15    ---(2)

On subtracting equation 1 and 2,

A - D = 38 - 15 = 23

So,

If the question can be answered by using both statements together but cannot be answered by using the statement alone.
