Sherif studied 11–12 year old boys at a summer camp, in four phases.
(B) Friendship formation — on arrival the boys mixed freely and chose their friends for games and other activities.

(A) Intergroup competition — the two groups were brought together in competitive situations, which brought tension and hostility, while ingroup loyalty became stronger.
(C) Intergroup cooperation — the water supply of both groups was disrupted, a superordinate goal that could be met only by working together, and this cooperation reduced the hostility.
